Our History
Before 1993
The roots of HCSS Grey-Bruce reach back to community-led efforts in Grey and Bruce counties to support seniors and adults who wished to remain living independently at home. Throughout the late 1980s and early 1990s, local organizations and volunteers provided services such as Meals on Wheels, transportation, and adult day programming. Discussions began in 1991 to bring these services together under a single not-for-profit organization, laying the foundation for what would become Home & Community Support Services Grey-Bruce.
1993
Home & Community Support Services Grey-Bruce begins operations as a not-for-profit organization through the amalgamation of area Meals on Wheels, Transportation and Adult Day Programs.
1997
Frozen Meals are added to the Meals on Wheels program.
2001
East Grey Adult Day Program opens in Markdale.
2001
HCSS showing appreciation for volunteers at BBQ.
2004
Bruce Peninsula Adult Day Program opens in Wiarton.
2005
Housekeeping Services launches.
2006
Saugeen Central Adult Day Program opens in Hanover.
2008
North Grey Adult Day Program opens in Meaford.
2015
Stroke Rehabilitation Day is introduced at Saugeen Central Adult Day Program in Hanover.
2018
HCSS Grey-Bruce celebrates its 25th Anniversary.
2020
The COVID-19 pandemic causes the temporary suspension of in-person programming and requires service delivery adaptations across the organization.
2021
After more than 20 years with the organization, Andy Underwood retires. Stephen Mushel becomes Executive Director.
2022
Adult Day Program volunteers and in-person Friendly Visiting begin to return as services are restored following pandemic restrictions.
2023
HCSS begins offering fee subsidy assistance to community members facing financial need.
2024
Carolyn Laitinen becomes Executive Director.
Today
More than 30 years after our founding, HCSS Grey-Bruce continues to grow and adapt to meet the changing needs of our communities. Guided by our mission and supported by dedicated staff, volunteers, donors, community partners, and funders, we help seniors and adults living with disabilities remain independent, connected, and living well at home. As we look to the future, we remain committed to building healthier, more supportive communities across Grey and Bruce counties.
